Grief and Loss Support Group Listings in Worcester
A few months back, a friend's mother passed away, and he had no idea where to turn. He wasn't looking for a therapist right away — he just wanted to sit in a room with people who got it. That's the thing about grief. It doesn't come with a manual, and most folks in Worcester don't know where to start looking for help. That's why we put together this list of grief and loss support group listings for Worcester, MA. Whether you're in Main South, Vernon Hill, the East Side, or the West Side, there's a group nearby that can help you or your family through a hard time.
General Grief Support Groups
If you've lost a loved one, friend, coworker, or neighbor and just need a place to talk about it, general grief support groups are a good place to start. These groups don't require you to have a specific type of loss. Anyone grieving is welcome.
VNA Care Bereavement Support Group meets the third Tuesday of every month from 7–9 p.m. at 67 Millbrook St., 500 North, Worcester, MA. It's a drop-in group, so you don't need to sign up ahead of time. Just show up. Call 800-521-5539 or check VNA Care's grief support page for updates before you go.
Jewish Healthcare Center Hospice Bereavement Support runs community grief groups throughout the year, led by a bereavement social worker. JHC is located at 629 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609. Call 508-713-0512 to get the current schedule.
Saint Vincent Hospital Hospice Bereavement Programs offer grief counseling for family members and caregivers who've lost someone. Call 508-383-7000 to find out what groups are currently running.
Peer Support Groups.
Sometimes what helps most isn't a clinical group — it's sitting with people who've been through something similar and just get it.
Kiva Centers — Living with Loss is a peer support group open to anyone dealing with grief, whether that's a death, a health change, a breakup, or losing a job or role in life. It meets every Monday at noon at 172 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, MA 01604, close to Main South. Call 508-751-9600 for more info.
Support Groups for Loss of a Child.
Losing a child is a different kind of grief, and it helps to be around people who understand that specific pain.
The Compassionate Friends — Worcester Chapter is built for families grieving the death of a child, no matter their age. The group meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 111 Park Ave., Worcester, MA 01609. Call Gene and Sue at 508-347-0981 if you have questions before your first visit.
Faith-Based Bereavement Support.
Some families want their grief support wrapped in prayer and faith community. Worcester has options for that too.
"At the Foot of the Cross" Bereavement Ministry offers sharing, prayer, and mutual support for anyone grieving a death. It meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Loreto Parish Center, 37 Massasoit Rd., Worcester, MA. Call the Diocese of Worcester at 508-791-7171 for details.
Support for Loss from Overdose.
Losing someone to overdose carries its own weight, often mixed with stigma and isolation. There's a group in Worcester built just for that.
The Sun Will Rise Foundation — Worcester supports people affected by a death from overdose. It's located at 172 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, MA 01604. Call 781-789-4604 and check their support group directory for registration and current meeting times.
Specialized Grief Groups.
Grief isn't one-size-fits-all. Losing a spouse hits different than losing a child, and losing a child to suicide is its own kind of heartbreak.
Center for Loss and Bereavement runs specialized groups for people grieving a spouse or partner, a teen or adult child, or a child lost to suicide. Some groups meet in person, others online. Registration and a short screening call may be required, so check their site for current groups before reaching out.
What to Do If You're Not Sure Where to Start.
If you're reading this list feeling overwhelmed, that's normal. A lot of families don't know which group fits their situation, especially right after a loss. Our advice: call two or three groups that sound close to your situation and ask what a typical meeting looks like. Most facilitators are happy to talk you through it before you ever walk in the door.
A Few Notes Before You Go.
Meeting times, locations, and registration rules change more often than you'd think, especially around holidays. Always call ahead or check the group's website before showing up, whether you're coming from Vernon Hill, the East Side, or anywhere else around Worcester. These groups are run by real people trying to help their neighbors through loss, and a quick phone call goes a long way toward making sure you show up at the right place, at the right time, ready to be met with support instead of a locked door.
If you or someone in your family is in crisis right now, don't wait on a monthly meeting. Call or text 988 for immediate support, any time of day or night.
